  • Renaissance Humanism

The period from year 1400 to 1650 saw the renaissance in Italy, which later began spreading over to other European countries. While this saw tremendous change in the political and social philosophy of the western world, a wave of new thought and doctrine came up in the literary and intellectual cultural space of those times. This was the beginning of Renaissance Humanism, which was now being looked in the new light. The earlier philosophy of Greece and Rome was seen with this perspective as the principal for looking beyond the medieval supernaturalism, while highlighting the human experience in a secular way.

  • Attributes of Humanism

While science has helped to formulate the beliefs of radical humanism, its philosophy highlights the fact that the universal system is constantly changing and nature is nothing but the mixture of matter and energy, which forms the basis of creation for all human and other living bodies. In addition, it believes that the concept of any supernatural being is only the creation of the psychological state of mind.

Various philosophers have defined humanism, in a simpler manner, which provides meaning of renaissance humanism, as interpreted by them, in a particular manner. In this direction, the following quote from the publication, “renaissance humanism” by Steven Kreis provides a refined way of understanding the subject.

Science and Humanism

“[r]eliance upon faith and God weakened. Fortuna (chance) gradually replaced Providence as the universal frame of reference. The present world became an end in itself instead of simply preparation of a world to come. In reality, as the age of Renaissance humanism wore on, the distinction between this world (the City of Man) and the next (the City of God) tended to disappear”.

As there are varied attributes of humanism, same shall be detailed in our forthcoming issues, on these pages. Meanwhile readers can get an insight of useful info-tips on different subjects by going through other topics.
